Hello WikiLemon. I’m one of the founders of Wikia.com. We’re launching the Wikia Music Network and I would like to invite this wiki to join.

We are offering free wiki hosting to all music communities. I’ve put up a page about hosting your music wiki at Wikia which covers some of the frequently asked questions about this. As well as free hosting, we can help to promote WikiLemon and drive more readers and potential contributors to it.

If anyone has any questions about Wikia, feel free to email me or leave a message on my talk page at the Music Wikia.

I’d love to hear the views of this community about joining Wikia.

Well, I’m not sure what’s going on, as I have no part in managing this wiki, but LAEB, our admin, hosts this himself. I’m not sure what he’s gonna say.

Out of curiosity, is there a Beatles wiki in there?

Our wiki is self-hosted on a server with a good bit of spare bandwidth, and from what I’ve seen, Wikia wikis have a lot of ads… I think we need to hear the head-sysop’s views on this

Greetings Angela! I’m the Luminiferous Æther Bunny and I’m the emperor of the Galactic Confederacy sysop of this wiki. I’d be very wary of this — I think I’d need a better reason than “it’ll drive more readers and potential contributors to it”. The free hosting is a non-issue because I own a private server which hosts WikiLemon, and I’d be paying the same for it whether or not this wiki was still hosted on it. I’d also wonder what would become of any custom extensions. This wiki includes several MediaWiki extensions that I wrote, and I’m not sure what your standards and procedures are regarding that.

Additionally, this wiki contains a great deal of content regarding our community’s culture, and information about non-musical works by Lemon Demon’s founder (such as short films and animations) — would that sort of content be allowed to remain if it were switched to a music Wikia site?

For now, I’m going to say “probably not” about moving this to Wikia, but I thank you for your generous offer. (It’s nice being noticed!)

Hi all. Thanks for your replies.

Mattgcn - if you log in, there are rarely ads. Here’s an example.

LÆB - as well as hosting and promotion, there are a number of new features. Maybe some of these would convince you? Examples include video embedding, easier upload, wysiwyg page creation, stats, and user profiles. You’re welcome to see this page or just generally explore the wikis to find more. We’re happy to install your custom extensions there, as well as giving you access to dozens more. All of the content you have here is acceptable on Wikia - nothing would need to change at all - this community would remain in control of the content and policies of the wiki. Whilst Wikia would be there to help when you need it, staff don’t interfere with the content of the wikis.

LyricWiki has recently joined Wikia, so we’re looking for other music-related wikis to add a sister projects to this one, which is aiming on having over a million lyrics pages later this year. There are also lots of new features since my last post; most significantly WYSIWYG editing which is an optional user preference that can make it much easier for newcomers to get started without having to learn wikitext.

Well with Wikia’s redesign I doubt that the offer to ever move to Wikia will ever be taken up now (not that the chances before hand were that high anyhow).
